At the end of July, the missionaries of Santo Domingo visited the shantytown Los Peloteros to bring food to needy families and toiletries for the sick. They were accompanied by volunteers who are available when it comes to helping those who suffer.
The neighborhood is extremely poor. The missionaries distributed food bags that were received with great joy.
In one of the houses, they found a woman who had suffered a stroke, lying on a cot in terrible conditions. She lives with her son who, due to his condition, cannot take care of her. They have no bathroom, no light, no ventilation and no food. However, with a smile she said: “I have nothing material, but spiritually I am full.” The next step is to get a bed inside her home so that she can receive the care she needs.
Throughout their journey, the missionaries met with much misery, but they not only offered nourishment to the people but also spiritual nourishment, encouraging them to receive the sacraments and to pray three Hail Mary’s to the Virgin every day, because if the material poverty is great there, much more the spiritual poverty.
